The other day my Chachu visited me.He was talking about typical Indian mentality and how they behaves etc.He came out with a very relevant example.Let me share it with all of you.
He says,"In India,if you offer something free, people will run after you and follow you ,however the moment you ask for their commitment, dedication or contribution for anything, they will refrain from supporting you.
Mahatma Gandhi told the Indians that,'Just follow me...be a part of the Non-violence,Non-co-operative movement,I don't need any money or anything.Entire India followed him.On the other hand,Netaji's famous quote was "Give me blood,I will give you freedom".How many people turned up for this offer?A very few..even people with in Congress created more problems for him(Gandhi created a Pattabhi Sitaramaiyah, against him during congress presidential election, though he failed to match Netaji's charismatic persona and lost the election miserably.) and resisted his way of fighting for freedom,as a result of which he was not so successful as Gandhi was.
There is a mad rush is Big Bazaar,Pantaloons or any such malls in cities. The reason being "BOGO",1+1 offers and so on...(again kuch free mein milega..public don't mind being in a queue for hours together or shop 3 trousers though there is just a requirement of one only to avail the offer..).
conduct GD/PI/Personality Development classes/workshops free of cost,"The class was superb..the faculty was outstanding..on the other hand, ask XYZ amount for the same... and invite them for a class.."Sorry!I am busy with my studies.I will try.I don't need these classes. There are so many people offering these classes free and what not>>>".
A fairly known Quiz master(me) does quizzes free of cost in colleges,schools..people react,"HOOHHHH...This guy is amazing..awesome..superb,well researched questions....if you ask the same college people your service charges next time onwards,"our budget is not that good to accommodate your expense',"we will think about you definitely when we do a quiz next time",we students will manage the show this time and so many other excuses....
If you have free entry for competitions, the number of participants will be uncountable..if you charge something, the responses may be lukewarm.
While working with educational organizations,I had come across some strange, funny & sad experiences in schools, colleges where we use to conduct career planning seminars across the length & breadth of Orissa. At some places, the biggest motivation for the participants was free food packets during or after the session, even though the primary objective or curiosity to know about effective career planning was not there.
The same applies to so called love stories of today's society.May it be a guy or a girl, everyone enjoys the fun of being into a relationship. But the moment you talk about taking it forward into a marriage or expect the same kind of love, affection, trust, faith, commitment that you usher on your partner, disaster it leads to....(people will say,you are too possessive..you are not giving any space for me to grow..you are very kiddish..you are immature..listen..there are family problems to tackle,I can't go against my parents...Why did you disclose it to your friends that we are going around..it should be secret...).Without any commitment, let it be a time pass...have fun(both physically & mentally),in case the relationship is not having any future..walk out amicably and forget whatever happened between us.Cause..again..you had fun for those few days, months & years right..cherish those golden moments..that's all...by the way..there are so many people who divorce even after a decade of relationship, finding that they are not compatible with each other. Therefore quarterly, monthly, yearly stints are still acceptable.
Let us talk about social problems. We keep on cribbing the way the govt runs, the way they fail to resolve civic problems but when you ask people to come forward and protest directly in front of the authorities,"I am sorry..I don't aim to be a politician...".If you actively protest against the same problems of your locality, raised by your people, for your people, either you will be branded as a person who is aiming to be a politician and creating a plot for his/her future ambition.Nobody will be beside you when you go to raise a complain. Then the concerned people will isolate you and say that nobody else had a problem, you are the only one who is problem child and ignore you.
Domestic violence rampant everywhere. But none of us are ready to be vocal against it or try to be a whistle blower and highlight such issues though it keep on happening around us.It is ironic to say that if you have a debate, essay competition regarding such topics, thousands of people will participate and talk about their views, the objective being winning the prize money. Then we all become happy that,"Indian youth is enlightened against issues, our future is bright etc..over a period of time, the same people will become dormant and ignore so many incidents happening with in their circle.Thereafter "they will apply their favorite "E for Excuses"formula.
Till the you don't ask anything from people in India, they will support you and pay rapt attention. If you are offerings freebies, you will be the darling of the junta, the moment you talk about charges, you are alone, aloof in the crowd.

Great writing sir ..... Its the real truth of todays world ...... hats off to u .....but I think that ur love story paragraph is not true in every case .....
ReplyDeleteDear Tirthankar,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments & compliments.Whatever I said is not true in all the cases but most of the cases.Commercialisation of relationship will be discussed in detail in my forthcoming story "Love @ Quarter".Keep on reading and give your honest feedback.
Its a very nice write up but as you said it should be acted upon and not just heard and seen as this is done by lakhs of people in a corner of our country daily. I don't blame anybody in person because I'm too of similar kind. We talk of removing corruption from the roots and in the second moment we don't even hesitate to give and take bribe to keep our work going. thats India and we are still proud of it because its not just our home land but also because of the culture we have cherished and nourished upon so far.
ReplyDeleteKeep going

Free India ... may be this is what it means ?? :)
ReplyDeletehe he just kidding .
India has amazing potential and spiritual strength . Yet these days the moral values are down with the fast and mad bad world.
Nice post and true ..... Yes most people are not like that yet there are many who are so and that is something Free India must free herself from ...
Keep going waiting for new posts Manas
Indians seek convenience ...I somehow fail to agree that indians believe in collectivism unlike west. Its personal benifit and vested interest that over shadows moral respnsibility. Again morality is personal and can not be superimposed.
ReplyDelete"I am not going to IIT(which essentially run by indian faculty members and Govt of India's money)to become a good engineer and serve the country. I am going because i want to work in Boston and drive a BMW when i complete my course (none the less exceptions emerge)" Simple!
"I dont care about anything happening around me as long as it does not affect my life diectly."
Over two dacades, many have lost their lives because of terrorism in Kashmir, no one went for a public rally to protest! but one terror attack in Mumbai was a patriotic awakining for most living in mumbai which in turn ignighted them to go for a peace march to light candles with anti-goverment slogans. The truth is, because they are scared of their own bloody safely in their own city!
There is always a cost-benefit analysis(of course personal!)
(P.S. I dont study in IIT or ever wanted to go there. It's just a case in point. I m a qualitative researcher.)
yes dude you are very right ,although thats a very hard truth to accept. We need to change to see changes around us....true it seems but still fake for today's scenario.
ReplyDeletequite impressed by the write up and your multitasking abilities..
